Shopify Plus Guide

Is Shopify Plus worth $2,300/month? That depends on what you do with it.

You're growing. Standard Shopify is feeling tight. You keep hitting limitations — checkout customization, automation, multi-currency, wholesale. So you're considering Shopify Plus.

Here's the truth most articles won't tell you: Shopify Plus is worth every penny for brands doing $1M+ per year. Below that, you're paying for features you won't fully use. The value isn't in the "Plus" badge — it's in what you build on top of it. Checkout customization, Shopify Flow automation, LaunchPad for flash sales, and Script Editor for dynamic pricing. But only if you actually implement them.

We've set up and managed dozens of Shopify Plus stores. Here's the complete setup guide — what to do, in what order, and what most brands skip.

How to fix this — step by step

1

Evaluate if Plus is right for your revenue level

Shopify Plus starts at $2,300/month. If your store does under $500K/year, the ROI math doesn't work yet. Between $500K-$1M, it's borderline — depends on whether you need checkout customization specifically. Above $1M, Plus pays for itself through lower transaction fees alone (you save 0.25% on credit card rates). Before upgrading, list the specific Plus features you'd use. If you can't name 3, wait.

2

Set up Shopify Flow for automation

Shopify Flow is one of the biggest Plus advantages. It automates repetitive tasks: auto-tag customers based on spend thresholds, auto-hide out-of-stock products, flag high-risk orders, trigger Slack notifications for VIP purchases, and auto-apply loyalty rewards. Set up your first 5-10 flows during the first week. Start with: auto-tag VIP customers (5+ orders), auto-tag high-risk orders, and auto-publish products that pass QC. These save hours per week.

3

Customize your checkout with Checkout UI Extensions

On standard Shopify, checkout is locked. On Plus, you can customize everything: add trust badges, display estimated delivery dates, show loyalty points, add gift messaging, implement custom upsells, and modify the layout. Use Checkout UI Extensions (the modern approach — checkout.liquid is deprecated). Each customization should serve a purpose: reduce friction, increase trust, or increase AOV. Don't add complexity for the sake of branding.

4

Configure multi-currency and international selling

Shopify Plus gives you Shopify Markets — the best way to sell internationally on Shopify. Set up your primary market (domestic), then add international markets with local currencies, translated content, and market-specific pricing. Customers see prices in their currency, pay in their currency, and you handle the conversion on the backend. This alone can increase international conversion rates by 30-40% compared to showing USD to everyone.

5

Set up LaunchPad for flash sales and product drops

LaunchPad lets you schedule automated campaigns: change prices, publish products, update the homepage, and apply discounts — all at a scheduled time. Perfect for BFCM, product launches, and flash sales. No more staying up until midnight to manually push changes live. Set everything up in advance, schedule the launch, and LaunchPad executes it precisely. If you do seasonal sales or product drops, this feature alone justifies Plus.

6

Migrate your data and integrations properly

If you're upgrading from standard Shopify, most data carries over automatically. But audit your apps — some have Plus-specific features you should enable. Klaviyo, ReCharge, Gorgias, and most major apps have enhanced Plus integrations. Also review your theme: Plus gives you access to your theme code with no restrictions, so have a developer audit and optimize it during migration. Don't just upgrade and leave everything as-is.
