Shopify Upgrade Decision
Is Shopify Plus worth $2,300/month — or are you overpaying for features you don't use?
We've built stores on every Shopify plan, from Basic to Plus. And here's the truth most Shopify agencies won't tell you: about half the brands on Shopify Plus don't need it. They upgraded because an agency told them to, or because "Plus sounds more serious." But Shopify Plus only makes sense when you actually need what it offers — custom checkout, Shopify Scripts, B2B functionality, automation via Shopify Flow, or handling serious traffic volume. If you're not using those features, you're paying $2,300/month for a logo badge. Let's figure out which side you're on.

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier. It gives you access to features that standard Shopify doesn't offer — custom checkout experiences, Shopify Scripts for dynamic pricing, advanced automation, B2B wholesale channels, and dedicated support.
But "enterprise features" doesn't mean every growing store needs them. We've seen brands doing $2M/year on standard Shopify's Advanced plan ($399/month) running beautifully. And we've seen brands doing $500K/year on Shopify Plus because someone told them they needed it. The right answer depends on what you actually need, not your revenue number.
Shopify vs Shopify Plus — feature by feature
| Feature | Shopify | Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout Customization | Limited checkout customization. Shopify controls the checkout experience. You can add some branding but can't modify the flow, add custom fields, or build unique checkout logic. | Full checkout customization via Checkout Extensibility. Custom fields, upsells in checkout, delivery date pickers, loyalty point redemption, and branded checkout experiences. |
| Shopify Scripts | Not available. Discount codes and automatic discounts are your only options. No way to run "buy 2 get 1 free" logic or tiered pricing natively. | Shopify Scripts let you build custom pricing rules — BOGO offers, tiered discounts, volume pricing, gift-with-purchase, and dynamic shipping rates based on cart contents. |
| Automation (Shopify Flow) | Shopify Flow is available on all plans now, but with limited triggers and actions. Basic automations like tagging and notifications work fine. | Full Shopify Flow with advanced triggers, Launchpad for scheduled sales and product launches, and deeper integration with apps and custom backends. |
| B2B / Wholesale | No native B2B channel. You need third-party apps or a separate wholesale site. Clunky and expensive to maintain. | Built-in B2B channel with company profiles, custom price lists, net payment terms, and draft orders. Run B2B and DTC from one admin. |
| Multi-Currency & Markets | Shopify Markets available on all plans with basic international selling. Auto currency conversion based on location. | Shopify Markets Pro and advanced multi-currency features. Custom pricing per market, duties and taxes handling, and up to 9 expansion stores for localized experiences. |
| API & Technical Limits | Standard API rate limits. Fine for most stores but can become a bottleneck with heavy integrations, large catalogs, or high-traffic events. | Higher API rate limits, priority API access, and dedicated support. Essential if you run complex integrations or need guaranteed uptime during flash sales. |
| Support | 24/7 support via chat and email. Good for standard issues but no dedicated account manager. Priority support isn't available. | Dedicated Merchant Success Manager, priority support queue, and access to Plus-only resources. Someone at Shopify who actually knows your account. |
| Cost | $39/month (Basic) to $399/month (Advanced). Transaction fees decrease with higher plans. Best value for stores doing under $1M/year. | $2,300/month or 0.25% of revenue (whichever is higher). No transaction fees on Shopify Payments. Makes financial sense when you're doing $1M+/year. |
Our recommendation
Don't upgrade to Shopify Plus until you actually need a feature that standard Shopify can't provide. The three most common legitimate reasons we see: you need custom checkout logic (upsells, custom fields, or complex discounts), you're launching a B2B channel alongside DTC, or you're doing $1M+/year and the lower transaction fees offset the platform cost.
If you're upgrading just because you're "growing" or because another agency said you should — push back. We've saved brands $20K+/year by keeping them on Shopify Advanced and using apps to fill the gaps that Plus would otherwise cover.
Pick Shopify if...
Stay on standard Shopify if you're doing under $1M/year in revenue, if your checkout doesn't need custom logic, and if you're not running B2B. Shopify Advanced ($399/month) gives you professional reporting, third-party calculated shipping, and lower transaction fees. For most growing DTC brands, it's more than enough.
Pick Shopify Plus if...
Upgrade to Shopify Plus when you need checkout customization, Shopify Scripts for advanced pricing, a B2B wholesale channel, or you're doing $1M+/year and the economics make sense. Also worth it if you're running international expansion stores or if your tech stack requires higher API limits.
