List Building Guide
The average eCommerce store converts 1.5% of visitors into email subscribers. Here's how to hit 5-8%.
You're driving traffic to your store — maybe through ads, maybe through SEO, maybe through social. But 95%+ of those visitors leave without buying anything. And if you don't capture their email, they're gone forever.
That's the real cost of a small email list. It's not just about email revenue — it's about losing the chance to bring people back when they're ready to buy. The average eCommerce customer needs 6-8 touchpoints before they purchase. Without their email, you're starting from zero every time they visit.
The good news: building an email list isn't complicated. It just requires the right offers, the right timing, and the right forms. Below is the exact system we set up for Shopify stores that consistently converts 5-8% of site visitors into subscribers.

How to fix this — step by step
Create a popup with a specific, compelling offer
Generic "subscribe to our newsletter" popups convert at 1-2%. A specific offer converts at 5-8%. The offer needs to be immediate and tangible: "10% off your first order," "Free shipping on your first purchase," or "Get our bestseller guide free." In Klaviyo, use the built-in form builder. Set it to trigger after 5 seconds on desktop and 8 seconds on mobile. Show it once per session, then suppress for 3 days if dismissed.
Add an exit-intent popup for desktop visitors
When someone moves their cursor toward the browser tab on desktop, trigger a second popup with a slightly different or stronger offer. "Wait — your 10% off expires when you leave this page." Exit-intent popups capture 2-4% of visitors who would otherwise leave forever. On mobile, trigger when the user hits the back button or scrolls up quickly. This is incremental to your timed popup — it catches people your first popup missed.
Embed signup forms in high-traffic locations
Popups aren't the only play. Add embedded signup forms to your site footer, your blog sidebar (if you have one), your About page, and your product page — below the reviews section. Each form should have context-specific copy. The footer form can be "Join 12,000+ customers who get early access to new drops." The product page form can be "Get notified when this is back in stock." Multiple touchpoints compound into higher total capture rates.
Use a quiz or interactive lead magnet
Product recommendation quizzes are the single highest-converting list building tool in eCommerce. "Find your perfect skincare routine" or "Which running shoe matches your style?" — quizzes convert at 10-15% because people want the result. Collect the email at the end in exchange for the recommendations. Tools like Octane AI, RevenueHunt, or Typeform integrate directly with Klaviyo. The quiz doubles as a product recommendation engine and a list builder.
Run a paid traffic campaign specifically for list building
If you have budget, run a Meta lead gen campaign promoting a high-value offer — a free guide, a quiz, or a significant discount on first purchase. Target lookalike audiences based on your best customers. Cost per lead should be $1-3 for most eCommerce niches. A list of 1,000 engaged subscribers built through a targeted campaign is worth more than 10,000 collected from a generic popup over years.
Leverage your checkout and post-purchase flow
Every customer who buys from you should be on your email list. Make sure the checkout opt-in checkbox is pre-checked (where legal — check your jurisdiction). Add a "subscribe for exclusive deals" checkbox on the order confirmation page. And in your post-purchase email flow, invite customers to join your inner circle, VIP list, or loyalty program. These are high-intent subscribers — they've already paid you money.
Want us to handle this?
Steps 1 through 4 will get your list growing immediately. A well-executed popup plus an exit-intent form plus embedded forms can add hundreds of subscribers per month depending on your traffic.
But building the list is just the beginning. Turning those subscribers into buyers — with the right welcome flows, segmented campaigns, and ongoing nurture sequences — is where the revenue actually comes from. We build complete email programs from list building through retention for eCommerce brands. If you want us to audit your current list growth strategy and show you what you're missing, that call is on us.
