Marketing Analytics Guide

72% of marketers can't prove their ROI. Don't be one of them.

You're spending $5K/month on ads, $3K on an agency, $500 on email tools, and $2K on content. That's $10,500/month in marketing spend. Can you tell me — right now, without checking anything — exactly which of those dollars generated revenue and which were wasted?

If you can't, you're in the majority. 72% of marketers struggle to prove marketing ROI. And without that proof, every budget decision is a gamble. Should you spend more on Facebook or Google? Is email worth the agency fee? Is that blog content actually driving sales?

The fix isn't complicated. It's a marketing dashboard that ties every channel, every campaign, and every dollar to revenue outcomes. Here's how to build one.

That Actually Matter

How to fix this — step by step

1

Define the 5 metrics that actually matter for your business

Stop tracking 50 metrics. Track 5: total revenue by channel (how much each channel generates), customer acquisition cost by channel (how much you spend to get a customer from each source), return on ad spend by campaign (revenue / ad spend), email revenue as a percentage of total revenue, and customer lifetime value (total revenue per customer over time). These five numbers tell you everything about your marketing performance.

2

Set up proper attribution tracking

Install UTM parameters on every marketing link: ?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=spring-sale. Use Google Analytics 4 as your central analytics hub. Connect Shopify, Klaviyo, and your ad platforms to GA4. Set up conversion tracking in every ad platform individually. Without proper attribution, your data is useless — you won't know which channels drove which sales.

3

Build a weekly marketing dashboard

Use Google Sheets, Looker Studio, or Triple Whale for your dashboard. Include: revenue by channel (this week vs. last week), ad spend and ROAS by platform, email revenue (flow vs. campaign), new customers vs. returning customers, and top-performing campaigns. Update weekly. Takes 30 minutes once set up. This single view replaces logging into 5 different platforms to piece together performance.

4

Calculate true marketing ROI monthly

Marketing ROI = (revenue attributed to marketing - total marketing cost) / total marketing cost x 100. Total marketing cost includes: ad spend, agency fees, tool subscriptions, content creation costs, and your time (at your hourly rate). A 300% marketing ROI means every $1 spent generates $3 in revenue. Track this monthly and trend it over time.

5

Make budget decisions from data, not feelings

Weekly dashboard review: is channel X improving or declining? Monthly budget review: reallocate spend from low-ROI channels to high-ROI channels. Quarterly strategy review: are we hitting our targets? What channels should we add or cut? If Google Shopping returns 6x ROAS and Facebook returns 2x, shift budget toward Google. If email returns 40x, invest more in list growth and automation. Let the numbers make the decisions.
