How to fix this — step by step
Choose a speed-first theme
Do not pick a theme because it looks pretty in the demo. Pick a theme that loads under 2 seconds on mobile. Dawn (free) is the fastest Shopify theme and a great starting point. For paid themes: Prestige, Impulse, and Turbo are proven performers. Test any theme with Google PageSpeed Insights before committing. A slow theme will cost you conversions from day one and is expensive to fix later.
Configure Shopify Payments and Shop Pay
Enable Shopify Payments as your primary payment processor. Then enable Shop Pay — it is the highest-converting checkout on the internet (68% higher conversion than guest checkout). Enable Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal Express. These express payment options matter enormously for mobile conversion. 60%+ of your traffic will be on phones. Make it effortless for them to pay.
Set up your domain and email properly
Connect your custom domain. Then set up DNS authentication for email: SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records. This is the step everyone skips and pays for later when their emails hit spam. If you are using Klaviyo (you should be), follow their domain authentication guide specifically. Proper authentication from day one means better inbox placement for every email you ever send.
Install Klaviyo and build core flows before launch
Install Klaviyo on day one — not after you launch. Set up at minimum: email capture popup with an offer, welcome email series (5-7 emails), and cart abandonment flow. These three automations should be running before your first visitor arrives. Most stores launch without email capture and lose 95% of their traffic forever. Even basic email capture recovers 3-5% of visitors for future marketing.
Configure analytics correctly
Install Google Analytics 4 with enhanced eCommerce tracking. Set up conversion events: add to cart, begin checkout, and purchase. Install the Google and YouTube channel for Shopping Ads (even if you are not running ads yet — the product feed needs time to process). Install Meta Pixel for Facebook and Instagram. These tracking foundations need to be in place before traffic arrives so you have data from day one.
Optimize product pages for conversion
Before adding 100 products, get one product page perfect. High-quality images (minimum 5, lifestyle and detail shots). Compelling product description (benefits, not just features). Social proof section ready for reviews (install Yotpo, Judge.me, or Stamped). Clear add-to-cart button above the fold. Shipping and return policy visible. Trust badges near the CTA. Get one page right, then replicate the pattern.
