Paid Media Guide
Your ROAS problem isn't in your ad account. It's in your funnel.
When ROAS drops, everyone looks at the ads. New creative. Different targeting. Higher budgets. Lower budgets. But in 70% of the ROAS problems we diagnose, the ads are fine. The funnel is broken.
Maybe the landing page doesn't match the ad. Maybe checkout friction is killing conversions. Maybe your tracking is broken and ROAS is actually higher than reported. Maybe your AOV is too low to sustain the CPMs.
ROAS is a system metric. It's the output of your creative, your targeting, your landing page, your checkout, your tracking, and your AOV all working together. Fix any one of those and ROAS improves. Here's how to diagnose which one is the problem.

How to fix this — step by step
Verify your conversion tracking first — it's broken more often than you think
Before changing anything in your ad account, verify tracking. Place a test order and confirm it shows up in Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads, and GA4 with the correct revenue value. We find broken tracking in about 40% of ad accounts we audit. If your Meta Pixel isn't firing on the thank-you page, or your Google Ads conversion tag is counting page views instead of purchases, your reported ROAS is wrong and you're making decisions based on bad data.
Match your landing page to your ad creative
If your ad shows a specific product and the click goes to your homepage, you've lost the intent. The landing page must continue the story the ad started. Product ad → product page with that exact product. Collection ad → collection page. Offer ad → landing page with that offer prominently displayed. Mismatched landing pages are the #1 fixable ROAS killer. We've seen ROAS double just from fixing the ad-to-page alignment.
Increase AOV so each conversion is worth more
ROAS = revenue / ad spend. Increasing revenue per customer is the fastest path to better ROAS. Add cart upsells ("Add matching socks for $12 — save 20%"), set a free shipping threshold above your current AOV, create bundle offers, and implement post-purchase upsells. A 20% AOV increase means 20% better ROAS on the exact same ad spend with the exact same conversion rate.
Optimize your retargeting — it's your highest-ROAS channel
Retargeting campaigns (targeting past site visitors, cart abandoners, and past purchasers) should deliver 5-15x ROAS. If they're not, check: Is your retargeting audience large enough (need 1,000+ people)? Is the creative different from your prospecting ads? Are you segmenting by intent level (cart abandoners vs. page viewers)? Allocate 20-25% of your ad budget to retargeting. This single change lifts blended ROAS because you're converting warm audiences cheaply.
Improve creative quality and testing velocity
Creative drives everything in 2026. The algorithm finds cheap impressions for ads that get engagement. Better creative → higher CTR → lower CPC → higher ROAS. Produce 15-20 creative variants per month. Focus on hooks (the first 1-3 seconds of a video or the headline of a static ad). Test different angles: problem/solution, testimonial, demo, lifestyle, comparison. Kill underperformers fast (after $50-100 in spend) and scale winners by duplicating into new ad sets.
Fix your post-click conversion rate
You can't ad-spend your way out of a low conversion rate. If your store converts at 1% and your competitor converts at 2.5%, they can afford 2.5x the CPC and still match your ROAS. Audit: product page quality (images, copy, trust signals), checkout friction (guest checkout, payment options, field count), mobile experience (where 60%+ of clicks land), and page speed (under 2.5 seconds). Every 0.5% conversion rate improvement directly improves ROAS.
