Email Platform Guide
Still on Mailchimp for your eCommerce store? Here's what that's costing you.
You picked your email platform years ago — probably Mailchimp because everyone knows the name. It was fine when you had 500 subscribers and sent a monthly newsletter. But now you're running an eCommerce store doing real revenue, and Mailchimp's eCommerce features feel like they were bolted on as an afterthought. Because they were.
The result: you can't see real-time purchase data in your email platform. Your segments update hours late instead of instantly. You can't build flows based on specific product views or cart values. Your revenue attribution is vague at best. And you're paying more per month than Klaviyo would cost for the same list size.
Picking the right email platform for eCommerce isn't about features on a comparison chart. It's about which platform gives you the behavioral data, automation capabilities, and revenue tracking you need to actually make email a profit center. Here's how to evaluate.

How to fix this — step by step
Evaluate eCommerce integration depth, not just "integration exists"
Every email platform "integrates with Shopify." But integration depth varies wildly. What you need: real-time behavioral tracking (product views, cart actions, checkout events), complete order history sync, product catalog feed for dynamic recommendations, predictive analytics (predicted next order date, lifetime value), and customer profile merging. Klaviyo does all of this natively. Mailchimp does 60% of it, slowly. Omnisend is somewhere in between.
Check flow and automation capabilities
Your email platform should let you build complex behavioral flows with conditional splits, time delays, A/B test branches, and dynamic content blocks — all without coding. Test the flow builder of each platform you're considering. Can you split paths based on cart value? Can you show different content based on purchase history? Can you A/B test within a flow? If the answer is no, the platform will limit your revenue potential.
Compare revenue attribution and reporting
You need to know exactly how much revenue each email, each flow, and each campaign generates. Evaluate: does the platform track revenue per recipient? Does it separate flow revenue from campaign revenue? Can you see attributed revenue with customizable attribution windows? Klaviyo provides all of this in its analytics dashboard. Mailchimp's eCommerce reporting is basic. If you can't tie email activity directly to dollars, you're flying blind.
Evaluate segmentation and personalization power
Real-time segments that update instantly based on behavior are non-negotiable. You need to segment by: purchase history, product category interest, engagement recency, predicted lifetime value, and custom profile properties. Klaviyo's segment builder is best-in-class for eCommerce. Mailchimp's segments are limited and update with delays. Check that segments refresh in real-time for triggered flows.
Calculate total cost of ownership, not just sticker price
Compare: monthly platform cost at your list size, cost of SMS (if included or add-on), time spent managing the platform (complexity matters), cost of migration from your current platform, and agency/consultant availability. Klaviyo is slightly more expensive than Mailchimp at small list sizes but dramatically more capable. At scale, Klaviyo's pricing is competitive. Factor in the revenue you're leaving on the table with a less capable platform — that's the real cost.
