Food & Beverage Shopify
A coffee brand came to us with a 1.3% conversion rate. Subscriptions were an afterthought. Here's what changed.
They had great coffee. Loyal customers who loved the product. But the Shopify store was treating subscription like a hidden feature. Subscribe-and-save was a tiny radio button below the one-time price. No explanation of how it worked. No savings callout. No flexibility messaging. Their subscription rate was 8% of orders. For a consumable product that people buy every 2-3 weeks. That's a massive miss.
We rebuilt their product pages with subscription as the star. Subscribe-and-save pre-selected by default. Clear savings displayed ($4.50/bag). Frequency options visible (every 1, 2, or 4 weeks). "Pause or cancel anytime" prominently displayed to reduce commitment anxiety. A "Build Your Coffee Box" feature that let subscribers mix roasts and get a discount on 3+ bags. And a mobile checkout flow that made subscribing from a phone feel as easy as ordering an Uber.
The result? Subscription rate went from 8% to 34% of orders. Overall conversion rate climbed from 1.3% to 2.8%. AOV increased from $28 (single bag) to $52 (multi-bag subscription). And because subscribers stick around an average of 7.2 months, LTV tripled. The same traffic. The same product. A completely different business model — because the store finally sold the way the product is actually consumed.

The Food & Beverage eCommerce opportunity
Food and beverage eCommerce on Shopify is growing faster than almost any other vertical, with the online grocery and specialty food market expected to hit $250B by 2027. But food Shopify stores face unique challenges: subscription models are essential but often poorly implemented, variety and customization drive higher AOV but require custom functionality, perishable products need clear shipping and freshness messaging, and dietary/allergen information must be prominent. The average food eCommerce conversion rate is 1.2-1.8%, but stores with subscription-first design, variety pack builders, and clear consumable product pages convert at 2.5-3.5%. For food brands where the entire business model depends on repeat purchases, the Shopify experience isn't a nice-to-have — it's the business model.
What food & beverage brands get wrong with shopify
- Subscribe-and-save is buried — a small radio button instead of the default, pre-selected option with clear value messaging
- No variety pack or "build your box" functionality — customers order one flavor instead of a multi-item subscription
- Shipping and freshness information isn't clear — food customers worry about perishable products arriving in good condition
- Dietary and allergen information is missing or hidden — causing purchase hesitation and post-purchase complaints
- Mobile checkout doesn't surface subscription options, payment plans, or delivery scheduling prominently enough
How we do shopify for food & beverage brands
We start with your subscription and reorder data. What percentage of orders are subscription vs. one-time? What's your subscriber retention curve? Which products have the highest and lowest reorder rates? Which products get added together most? This data tells us exactly what the store needs to do better.
Then we build a Shopify store designed around how food consumers buy. Subscription-first product pages where subscribe-and-save is the default selection, savings are calculated and displayed, and "pause or cancel anytime" messaging reduces commitment anxiety. A "Build Your Box" or variety pack builder that lets customers mix flavors, sizes, or products — driving 30-50% higher AOV than single-item purchases. Clear shipping and freshness sections: "Ships cold in 2 days," "Roasted this week," "Best before" dates visible. Dietary and allergen badges on every product (gluten-free, organic, keto, nut-free) because food shoppers filter by these attributes. And mobile-first checkout with subscription options, delivery scheduling, and express payment methods prominently displayed. We integrate Recharge or Loop for subscriptions, Klaviyo for reorder and retention flows, and your review platform for social proof.
