llms.txt

Quick definition

A proposed standard file at /llms.txt that gives AI agents a curated, condensed view of your most important content.

What it actually means

Inspired by robots.txt and sitemap.xml, llms.txt is a markdown file at the site root pointing AI crawlers (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini) at your authoritative content. It is not yet a formal W3C standard but adopted by Anthropic, Stripe, Vercel, and dozens of others. The file should list: brand overview, core service URLs, top-cited content, and high-signal pages. Implementing llms.txt does not increase citations directly but signals you take AI-agent discoverability seriously.
