Platform Comparison
A custom website sounds impressive. But for 95% of eCommerce brands, it is an expensive mistake.
The pitch sounds great: "Build exactly what you want. No platform limitations. Complete control. Unique experience nobody else has." And then you spend $50,000-$200,000 building it. Six months minimum timeline. Then ongoing maintenance costs of $3,000-$10,000 per month for developers to keep it running, patch security vulnerabilities, and add features that Shopify stores get with a $20/month app.
Meanwhile, your competitor launched on Shopify in three weeks for $5,000, installed the apps they needed, and spent the remaining $45,000-$195,000 on marketing that actually drives revenue.
Custom builds make sense at scale — $10M+ annual revenue with truly unique business logic. For everyone else, Shopify gives you 95% of the functionality at 10% of the cost and 20% of the timeline. The brands that win are not the ones with the fanciest tech stack. They are the ones that ship fast and spend on growth.

We have built both. Custom Next.js headless builds and standard Shopify implementations. The honest truth: unless you have business requirements that genuinely cannot be met by Shopify (rare), the custom route costs more, takes longer, and produces worse results in the first 12 months because budget goes to development instead of marketing.
Shopify vs Custom-Built Website — feature by feature
| Feature | Shopify | Custom-Built Website |
|---|---|---|
| Launch Timeline | 3-6 weeks for a professional Shopify store. Theme setup, customization, app configuration, and content — ready for traffic. | 3-12 months depending on complexity. Design, development, testing, QA, and launch. Often delayed and over budget. |
| Total Cost (Year 1) | $5,000-$30,000 for store build + $500/year platform + apps. Budget remainder goes to marketing and growth. | $50,000-$200,000 for development + $36,000-$120,000/year for maintenance team. Most budget consumed by building instead of growing. |
| Flexibility | 95% of eCommerce needs covered by Shopify + apps + custom Liquid. Remaining 5% addressable via Checkout Extensibility or headless. | 100% flexibility. Build anything you can imagine. But that flexibility comes with proportional cost and maintenance burden. |
| Maintenance | Platform maintained by Shopify. Security patches, server scaling, checkout updates — all handled. You focus on selling. | You maintain everything. Security patches, server monitoring, bug fixes, dependency updates, and infrastructure scaling — all on your team. |
| Checkout | Shop Pay — highest-converting checkout on the internet. Mobile wallets, express payments, and one-click purchasing built in. | Custom checkout that you must build, test, optimize, and maintain. Matching Shop Pay conversion rates requires significant investment. |
| Ecosystem | 8,000+ apps for any functionality you need. Reviews, loyalty, subscriptions, upsells, analytics — all available as plug-and-play solutions. | Every feature built from scratch or integrated via API. No app store equivalent. Every new capability requires development work. |
| Scalability | Automatic scaling handled by Shopify. Flash sales, viral moments, and traffic spikes do not crash your store. | Scaling is your responsibility. Server configuration, load balancing, caching, and CDN setup required to handle traffic spikes. |
Our recommendation
For eCommerce brands under $10M/year: Shopify. Put your budget into marketing and growth, not custom development. The 5% of things Shopify cannot do are almost never the things preventing you from growing.
For brands above $10M/year with genuinely unique business logic (custom product configurators, complex B2B pricing, deeply integrated ERP systems): custom or headless Shopify may justify the investment. But even then, Shopify Plus handles most enterprise needs.
The question is not "what is technically possible?" It is "what will generate the most revenue per dollar spent in the next 12 months?"
Pick Shopify if...
Pick Shopify if you want to launch fast, spend budget on marketing, and let someone else handle infrastructure. Best for brands under $10M/year and any brand that values speed-to-market over theoretical flexibility.
Pick Custom-Built Website if...
Pick custom only if you have genuinely unique business requirements that Shopify cannot serve, a $50K+ development budget, a dedicated technical team for ongoing maintenance, and existing revenue to sustain the longer timeline.
